Become an Uber, Lyft & Hopp Driver in Toronto & the GTA

A step-by-step signup guide from an active GTA driver: requirements, the Toronto PTC licence, vehicle inspection, where to wait for trips, and how to keep more of what you earn.

⚠️ Welcome bonus: the new-driver welcome offer is only attached to your account when you sign up through a referral link — use one of the buttons above before you register. Signing up directly in the app without a link means no welcome bonus, and it cannot be added later.
🇨🇦 Canada-wide: these referral links are valid across Canada — sign up in any Canadian city and the welcome offer follows your city (amounts vary by city; for Hopp, in the Canadian cities where Hopp operates). Referrals outside Canada do not count.

📝 How signup works (same flow on all three apps)

  1. Start through a referral link above so the welcome offer is attached to your account.
  2. Create your account and upload documents: licence, vehicle registration, insurance, and a profile photo.
  3. Book and pass the vehicle safety inspection; upload the certificate.
  4. Complete the background check (usually a few days).
  5. Wait for your Toronto PTC licence to be issued through the platform, then go online and take your first trip.
  6. Repeat the same document set on the other two apps — driving on multiple apps cuts your waiting time between trips.

🚙 Pick your platform

Uber

The biggest demand in the GTA and the best place to start. Pearson Airport has a designated rideshare queue lot — join the queue and wait for airport requests.

Start Uber signup

Lyft

Strong in Toronto and growing across the GTA. Important: your referral code must be in place at the very first step of your application — it cannot be added afterwards.

Start Lyft signup

Hopp

A newer platform in the GTA run by the team behind Bolt. Lower competition between drivers while it grows — a good third app to run alongside Uber and Lyft.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What do I need to drive in Toronto?
Age 21+, a full Ontario G licence, a SIN and right to work in Canada, a background check, a qualifying 4-door vehicle with a safety certificate, and a Toronto PTC licence arranged through the platform.

What is the PTC licence?
The City of Toronto's Private Transportation Company driver licence. You don't apply for it yourself — the platform submits it after your background screening clears.

Why sign up through a referral link?
The new-driver welcome offer only attaches when you sign up through a referral link before registering. Signing up directly in the app means no welcome bonus.

Can I drive on all three apps?
Yes — most GTA drivers run two or three apps to reduce waiting time. Use the same documents for each signup.

I live outside the GTA — can I still use these links?
For Uber and Lyft, yes, anywhere in Canada: referrals only count within the same country, and the bonus amount follows your signup city. Signups outside Canada do not earn a referral bonus.

How much will I earn?
It varies with hours, demand and location. Peak times pay best. Treat it as variable business income and budget for HST and taxes.
